Summer Workshop for Graduate Students

September 12-16, 2010

Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa, Israel

Organizing committee: Uri Bader, Michael Entov, Amos Nevo

The workshop aims to expose graduate students to a variety of recent developments in subjects related to growth in group theory, algebra and dynamical systems.

The required prerequisites for attending the summer school are familiarity with the material taught in the undergraduate courses in mathematics.

The main topics that will be addressed are as follows

I) Growth in groups.

(1) Polynomial growth: Kleiner's proof of Gromov's theorem.

(2) Intermediate growth: groups acting on rooted trees.

(3) Exponential growth: uniform growth in linear groups.

(4) Growth in finite groups (fast generation, spectral gap).

(5) Growth and quasi-morphisms.

II) A broader perspective.

(1) Overview of different notions of growth.

(2) Aspects of growth in algebras.

(3) Aspects of growth (and entropy) in dynamical systems.

(4) Representation growth.

(5) Aspects of growth and amenability in groups and algebras.

List of confirmed speakers: Uri Bader (Technion), Michael Entov (Technion), Tsachik Gelander (Hebrew U.), Yair Glasner (BGU), Elon Lindenstrauss (Hebrew U.), Alex Lubotzky (Hebrew U.), Uri Onn (BGU), Uzi Vishne (Bar-Ilan U.), Barak Weiss (BGU).

To be confirmed: Eli Aljadeff (Technion)

All the lectures will be held in Benjamin Auditorium (Sego 1),

Sego Architecture Building, Technion City, Haifa

All graduate students and advanced undergraduate students are welcome to attend the summer school.

We will be able to pay for accommodation in a hotel in Haifa, September 12-16,

at least for those who apply early enough.

In order to register for the workshop, please fill out the registration form and send it
